    The United States once had more than 140 time zones, usually set by the position of the sun. To operate safely over long distances, the railroads proposed a standardized timekeeping for the country. Learn how we came to live and work by the system they created. Free admission.

    Our Archives has thousands of documents, photos, timetables, menus, maps and more. Once a quarter, we showcase some of these items in our meeting room, and answer your questions about the railroads and trains they represented. Free admission. Museum hours are 11:00am to 3:00pm.

It's About Time! How the Railroads Created Our Time Zones

Our current exhibit, It's About Time! How the Railroads Created Our Time Zones is open through February 1st.

The United States once had more than 140 time zones, usually set by the position of the sun. To operate safely over long distances, the railroads proposed a standardized timekeeping for the country. Learn how we came to live and work by the system the railroads created. 

The exhibit is open during museum hours of 11:00am to 3:00pm, Tuesday through Saturday. We are closed on major holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day.
