About the event
Begun in 1880, Central Florida’s Golden-Age of railroading witnessed the creation of more than 200 new cities during the following two decades. Many of the towns are little more than a place name today, residential communities such as Astatula, Crown Point, and Palm Springs. Scattered across a vast region known today as Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Sumter counties, the intriguing town-builders of the 19th century, however, had envisioned their new railroad towns to be a major metropolis in an ever-growing American Paradise. Central Florida expanded during the closing decades of the 19th century because of three-dozen privately owned railroads, many of which vanished almost as fast as the many ghost towns which had been established along the railroad routes.
The Central Florida Railroad Museum presents Railroad Ghost Towns & Phantom Trains, a free presentation, at 1:30pm Saturday, December 14, 2024.
